How We Support Complex Feeding Needs
Children with medically complex feeding needs benefit most when every provider involved in their care is working from the same understanding. Our role is to support feeding development and mealtime function as part of that broader picture—not to replace or override the guidance of your child's physicians, GI specialists, pulmonologists, or other medical providers.
Every plan is built around your child's specific medical history, current status, and the priorities set by your care team. Progress looks different for every child, and support is adjusted as your child's needs change over time.
This also includes cases where selective or restrictive eating (including ARFID) has become severe enough to affect a child's growth, nutrition, or medical stability.
Conditions We Support
Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD)
A Pediatric Feeding Disorder means a child has ongoing difficulty eating in a way that impacts their growth, health, and daily life. These challenges go beyond typical picky eating and are often influenced by more than one factor at the same time—medical, nutritional, feeding skill, and psychosocial factors can all play a role.
Children with PFD may want to eat but struggle because eating feels hard, uncomfortable, unsafe, or overwhelming for their body.
Tube Feeding & Feeding Transitions
For children who rely on tube feeding, eating involves both medical and developmental considerations. This may include NG-tube or G-tube dependence, limited oral intake, stress related to feeding transitions, or reduced comfort with oral feeding. Support is coordinated closely with your medical team, since tube weaning and feeding transitions carry real medical considerations.
GI Issues & Allergies
Digestive discomfort can strongly shape how a child experiences eating. Conditions such as reflux, food allergies or intolerances, and constipation can make feeding feel uncomfortable or even unsafe. Over time, these experiences can also affect a child's nervous system, leading to stress or avoidance around meals—even after medical symptoms improve.
Genetic & Craniofacial Conditions
Certain genetic or craniofacial differences can influence how a child develops feeding skills, including sucking, chewing, swallowing, and coordinating breathing with eating—conditions like Pierre Robin sequence, Down syndrome, cleft lip and/or palate, or low muscle tone (hypotonia). Feeding needs often change as children grow, and support focuses on meeting children where they are developmentally while supporting safe, functional skill progression.
